Writer's Block: The start of something wonderful
What is your favorite opening line of a book, and why?

"Marley was dead: To begin with..."

Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol.

I love this book read in its original form in general. I remember being read it when I was little, and there must have been so much stopping to answer questions on my mom's part; still, I remember understanding what was going on on a whole. Even in the first page, it shows a dark humor that I've inherited from my mom's side of the family, when it goes on about what's so dead about a doornail.

The first line catches you, though, and I really think that it may have influenced my writing in general. Starting with a statement, like you know what's happening, then going on to explain.
