Fanfic: Ice and Stars
Title: Ice and Stars
Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: G
Pairing: Remus/Sirius
Summary: This actually rather pointless. Sirius and Remus enjoy a winter night. Quite fluffy.

Remus gave a puff of breath, watching with satisfaction as it rose up and disappeared. He shifted, but didn't sit up, simply stuck his cold hands inside his cloak. The sky was almost completely dark now, with just a glimmer of purple on the horizon. Tomorrow night would be the new moon. Behind him there was a crunch of snow. He smiled.

“Hey, Padfoot,” he said.

“Moony...what are you doing?” Sirius replied. “It's freezing out here. And anyway, what about dinner?”

“I've still got some time,” Remus said. “I was just looking up at the stars. It's not often enough that I simply enjoy them.”

He looked to the side to see Sirius lay down next to him. He drew out one of his hands and searched for Sirius'. The darker boy grabbed it and they lay for a few moments in silence.

“Do you ever think about the constellations for their stories?” Remus asked.

Sirius' eyes glittered in the dark. He knew what Remus was asking. Do you ever think about your connection with them, like I do the moon? He shrugged.

Sometimes,” he said, turning his head up.

What about that one?” Remus asked, pointing up. “The dog who pines after his master Orion. Who follows him everywhere.”

Sirius gave a sharp laugh. Remus thought suddenly how it seemed to have changed since his friend had become an animagus; many mannerisms had developed.

That was a complete failure,” he said. “I wonder what my parents expected from naming me that. Besides, the girl Orion loved was tricked into shooting him by her brother. I suppose it's a demise befitting my family. I think about that one sometimes—the Lady Warrior.”

Lady my arse.” Remus felt Sirius' hand twitch slightly. It wasn't often that the werewolf swore. He glanced to the side, and saw the smile on Sirius' face. He looked back up. “And the Lion Heart.”

Oh, yes, Regulus. I figured it out; that is the second star to the left, and straight on till morning.”

Now it was Remus' turn to laugh. “Oh really?”

There was a silence, and Remus looked at Sirius again. Where he had been smiling a few moments ago, now he looked almost sad, his eyebrows drawn together.

I don't want him to grow up, not really,” Sirius said, finally. “He'd grow bitter, and hard, and icy. But if he remains a child, I'm afraid he'll be used. It would be so easy to bully him into becoming a Death Eater, and I don't think he could take that.” Sirius looked back and Remus. “For all that he pretends, he really is a good kid.”

I know,” Remus said. “I know that he's all bitchy and snobby as an act. I know because you do the same thing, sometimes. It's like some sort of defense system you've built up.”

Sirius nodded. Suddenly Remus regretted bringing the younger boy into the conversation. He'd done so because he knew that the two of them didn't hate each other as much as they pretended. He thought Sirius might make a snide comment, and they'd laugh about it, because both of them knew that, although it was perfectly true, Sirius never meant any real harm from it. Remus didn't expect this deep sadness to set in.

On a split second decision, Remus jumped up.

Hey, Pads, let's go see if the lake's frozen solid.”

Sirius smiled and the two of them ran down the side of the hill. Remus gingerly tapped the ice with his foot, but with a shove from the taller boy he tripped down onto the ice. Just when he thought he had his balance, he slipped and fell. Sirius was running out, although it was obvious he was having some trouble of his own keeping balance. Remus got up to follow him, and wound up grabbing him for balance, sending the two of them skidding.

After a while of chasing each other, they reached a curve in the shore on the edge of the forest, which hid them from view of the castle. Remus put his hands on Sirius' neck and kissed him softly. He felt arms around his waist and smiled as the animagus leaned down to deepen the kiss. After a few moments they parted. Sirius' face was flushed with cold and happiness. Snow was contrasting with his dark hair, from where they had been laying. Remus wet his lips.

You're really beautiful,” he said quietly.

Sirius gave a lopsided smile and raised an eyebrow. “Oh really?” he said. “I didn't know that.”

Remus pulled away. “Don't make fun,” he said. “I really meant it.”

Sirius tilted his head slightly, and Remus could see that he was deciding whether he regretted laughing or not. As many times a day he heard it from girls, as much time as he spent on his own appearance, his own lover almost never told him. Remus wasn't one for loud declarations of love, or for fawning over anyone. Often Sirius had to tell from the look in the werewolf's eyes, or the way they kissed, even from the small touches they allowed themselves throughout the day.

Dark eyelashes flickered as grey eyes glanced down, then back up to Remus. It was how he apologized without actually doing so. Remus moved forward again and put his arms around Sirius' waist. He smiled as he felt Sirius' cheek on his own.

The moment was ruined, though, as a loud grumble came from the werewolf's stomach. Sirius let out another bark of laughter.

Remus grinned in embarrassment. “Starving.”

Laughing, Sirius grabbed Remus' hand, and the two of them ran back across the ice toward the castle.

Notes: Last night I was laying in bed, next to my dorm's wonderful eight-foot windows, and realized that the star I can see every night is Sirius. (There's so much light pollution here I can hardly see much else.) So I thought about that, and could find Orion's belt and all that, and i thought this bit of cotton candy up. So there you have it.

Btw, for those who don't know: the "Lady Warrior" is Bellatrix. I really, really hope everyone caught the Peter Pan reference.

You have no idea how happy I am that you used the name Barrie. I really don't know many people who know that Peter Pan was his

I don't apologize. I just state the fact!

Sirius being shy about that is ridiculously sweet. I love the way you described his apologies, and how they were about to have a moment before Remus accidentally ruined what he had started. XD

I also learned a lot about stars, which was also cool.

Great job!
